Abstract

This article reviews the methods employed in archaeological site mapping with emphasis to ground-based geophysical techniques. The article summarizes the methodology and instrumentation underlying the basic modules of geophysical exploration of archaeological sites, such as electromagnetic, ground penetration radar, soil resistance, magnetic, seismic, gravity and chemical techniques. Sections of the article are also devoted to processing and presentation of the geophysical data and their synthesis with satellite remote sensing and GIS.
