Abstract

Abstract Relative undercooling and linear velocity of crystallization have been investigated for m-nitroaniline. The linear velocity of crystallization, ν, is found to depend on undercooling ΔTaccording to the equation ν = k( ΔT) n , where k = 0.002 mm/s K and n = 3.47. Good-quality single crystals as large as 15 mm diameter and 5 cm length were grown from the melt by the Bridgman-Stockbarger method. It was observed that purification of the source material significantly minimized the microcracks, surface voids, and compositional inhomogeneities and enhanced the optical quality of the crystal.
