Abstract

Comparison between data from the bacteriology laboratory, Hospital Activity Analysis data and statutory notifications of acute meningitis in Darlington during 1984, 1985 and the first 6 months of 1986 show gross discrepancies. In order to ensure appropriate action is taken sufficiently early, despite failure to notify, it is suggested that the relevant community physicians be advised of admissions of cases of meningitis by the Control of Infection Officer, and of lumbar puncture specimens examined to confirm this diagnosis by the Pathology Laboratory.
