Does the oxide layer take part in the oxygen evolution reaction on platinum?:A DEMS study

Abstract

Abstract Using 18O labelling together with differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) it was found that (i) an 18O containing Pt-oxide layer does not exchange oxygen with H 2 16O; (ii) only 16O 16O is evolved from H 2 16O on an 18O containing oxide layer, both in acid and in alkaline solutions. Consequently, the oxide layer does not take part in the oxygen evolution reaction on Pt electrodes.
