Abstract

Abstract The photoreduction of furil by pentachlorophenol was carried out in magnetic fields ranging from 10 G to 1000 G. The process was cyclic because the product is again a furil molecule but with nuclear spin polarization. The spin polarizations were observed in the NMR spectra recorded at a field of 14 kG. A three proton model was used to attempt to understand the experimental results; the computational procedure used the radical pair mechanism. Moderate agreement with experiment was achieved only by explicitly accounting for relaxation effects which occurred during the 12 s interval from transfer of the sample to the spectrometer.
