Energy flow i s estimated nnd the role of meoroff.-tunn i n the community i s described. Investigations are based on production measurements and b e l l j e r experiments throughout 1980. (1) Community structure of macrofeuna i s characterized by the strong dominance of Hydrobia ulvae . Because of these mud s n a i l s , there i s e predominance of small sized grazers/deposit feeders. (2) The remaining macrofeuna species belong to different trophic l e v e l s . The investigated area i s a euphotic shallow water region with high density of benthic diatoms. Due to t h i s food a v a i l a b i l i t y and to the fact that the dominant macrofauna species prefer dietoms as food, the energy flow through the benthic communities i s meinly characterized as grazing food chain based on benthic primary production, which i s produced i n the community and i s not imported from outside, (3) Annual secondary production of macrofauna at a seaward f l a t characterized -2 -1 by the lugworm Arenicola marina i s 50 g afdw m a f which i s s i m i l a r to the production of an adjacent seagrass-bed (48 g efdw m "a J. In a landward Nereis-Corophium-belt production i s considerously less —2 —1 (17 g afdw m~ a~ ). Differences are attributed to limited feeding time caused by a much shorter inundation period .
