Abstract

Abstract Magnetic states of Laves phase compounds, MFe 2, have been investigated for various M atoms. A magnetic transition from one ferromagnetic state to another more localized one takes place with increasing temperature in (Sc 1− x Ti x )Fe 2. A first order magnetic transition takes place between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states in the mixtures of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic compounds, (Hf 1− x Ta x )Fe 2 and Ce(Fe 1− x Al x ) 2. From the analysis of these temperature induc ed magnetic transitions with the spin fluctuation theory, it is shown that the temperature variation of the mean square local amplitude of spin fluctuation is essentially important for understanding magnetic properties of Laves phase compounds.
