Abstract

Abstract The concentration and size distribution of soot particles were determined in the 0.02–0.5 μm radius range on the basis of morphological identification at the following sites: suburban Budapest, a rural station in Hungary and from a ship on the South Atlantic Ocean. The average concentration values obtained are 1500, 260, 4.8 (tropical zone) and 0.34 cm −3 ( φ>40° S latitude), respectively. The size distributions can be approximated by logarithmic normal distribution and do not differ significantly from each other. The ratio of the concentration of internally mixed particles to the total soot concentration varies with the particle size and sampling site.
