Ranganatha Temple Complex

Dedicated to Vishnu, this is the largest temple complex in the state of Tamil Nadu that was built under the Chola dynasty in the 11th c., and expanded in the 17th c. under the Nayaka dynasty of Madurai. The most recent restoration was in 1987. The complex consists of seven concentric, rectangular enclosures, each accessed by pyramidal-towered gopuras, of which there are 21, most of them on a north-south axis. Not only numerous, the gopuras are exceptionally tall and highly decorated with colored sculpture.
