Abstract

Abstract The mineralogy and chemistry of a sediment core from the Hess Deep is studied in detail. The top 46 cm consists of a high charge smectite, calcite and feldspar whereas serpentine dominates the lower portion of the core. The serpentine was identified as 2M clinochrysotile. Microscopic and chemical studies suggest that the serpentine has been precipitated from hydrothermal solutions.
