Abstract

Telephone: 49-2999 RESEARCH SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY VIRUS ECOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP Box 475, P.O. Canberra City, A.C.T. 22 September 1977 Professor Joshua Lederberg, Department of Genetics, School of Medicine, Stanford University, STANFORD, CALIFORNIA 94305, Dear Professor Lederberg, Gordon Ada passed your memorandum on viruses in Drosophila on to me. I know of no work showing that a virus of Drosophila can grow in mammalian cells, and I'm pretty sure this has not been done in Canberra. N.Z., Paul Scotti, who was here but is now +t D.S.I.R., Auckland, has been growing cricket paralysis virus (Drosophila virus C) in cultured Drosophila cells (J. gen. Virol. 35, 393). Jousset and colleagues in France have been studying various Drosophila viruses (e.g. J. gen.Virol 269). Also I believe that Kurstak at Montreal once claimed to have got mammalian cell transformation using densonucleosis virus, but that virus comes from Galleria and not I think yet from Drosophila. Yours sincerely, (A.J. GIBBS)
