Abstract

Abstract “Solid solutions” in the system CeO 2Y 2O 3, originally reported to be continuous and homogeneous and subsequently to consist of two discrete regions of homogeneity, have been re-examined by electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. The two regions of homogeneous solid solution are confirmed and shown to be commensurately modulated structures — based on fluorite type at lower (about 20–60 mol.%) YO 1.5 contents, and on C type at higher (greater than 70 mol.%) YO 1.5 contents.
