Different types of magnetic ordering in RFe3(BO3)4, R=Gd, Tb, Er, and Y, as studied by the method of Er3+spectroscopic probe

Abstract

Abstract We studied temperature-dependent high-resolution optical spectra of Er 3+ probe ion introduced into single crystals of the borates RFe 3(BO 3) 4, R=Gd, Tb, Er, and Y. Exchange splittings of the Er 3+ Kramers doublets were found from the spectra. They manifest the magnetic ordering in Gd, Tb, Er, and Y iron borates at 37, 41, 38, and 39 K, respectively, and a spin-reorientation in GdFe 3(BO 3) 4: Er (1%) at T R=7.5 K. From a comparison of the data on Y, Er, and Tb iron borates with those on GdFe 3(BO 3) 4 where the magnetic structure has been determined earlier, we suggest the following patterns of the ordered Fe magnetic moments: m Fe⊥ c for R=Er and Y; m Fe‖ c for R=Tb.
