Abstract

Abstract The lowest nontrivial scattering amplitudes are computed at tree level for three classically conformally invariant models: the Wess-Zumino-Witten model, the O( n)-model, both known to be classically integrable, and an N=4 supersymmetric (hyperkähler) nonlinear σ-model. It is found that there is particle production for all models except for the WZW model at the critical points (i.e., when it is quantum conformally invariant), which can be understood as due to the decoupling of left- and right-movers at the critical points. This shows that tree level amplitudes, which are unphysical in the quantum theory, cannot be used to decide against classical integrability for conformally invariant models (in contrast to the case of massive theories).
