An attempt to determine Van Hove's overlap function and shadow elastic scattering from the measurements of inelasticπ+p interactions at 8 GeV/c

Abstract

Abstract From the measurements of π +p inelastic reactions at 8 GeV/ c the Van Hove overlap function is determined assuming no correlations among secondary particles, a constant phase of the wave function and neglecting spins. The overlap functions obtained for various channels are used to compare how much “peripheral” or “central” these collisions are. It has been found that the computed overall overlap function violates unitarity bounds on partial inelastic cross sections σ in l and is in a striking disagreement with the σ in l estimated from the analysis of the elastic differential cross section. It seems that the failure of the calculation is mainly due to the incorrect assumption that the phase of the many-body wave function does not depend on the momentum configuration of the final-state particles.
