Abstract

Abstract Poland was the first post-socialist country in Eastern Europe to move towards a market-oriented economy. Problems of the food economy and of agricultural policy in Poland during the current transitional period are discussed and positive and negative results of the attempted transformation are presented. Stress is laid on the additional problems caused by Poland's 12-year recession. The country's food and agricultural policy changes and problems facing agricultural production, the process of adaptation of peasant agriculture to market economy, the possibilities and limitations of the development of agriculture and the food economy are discussed.
