Abstract

Abstract The W 5Si 3-type (tetragonal) to Mn 5Si 3-type (hexagonal) phase transition in Zr 5Al 3 was studied by high temperature X-ray diffraction. It was found that dissolved oxygen was present in the octahedral origin position in arc-melted Zr 5Al 3 samples at the 0.1 wt.% level. The rate of the tetragonal to hexagonal transition was consistent with a thermally driven transition as opposed to an interstitial oxidation.
