Abstract

Aim. To evaluate the suitability of inclusion of the immunomodulator and antioxidant Ksimedon into the treatment of school-age children with community-acquired pneumonia. Methods. The domestic pyrimidine derivative drug Ksimedon was included into the complex treatment of 16 boys and 14 girls of school age with community-acquired pneumonia starting from the 2nd day of hospitalization at a daily dose of 15 mg/kg (study group). The comparison group consisted of 10 boys and 9 girls who were treated by the traditional method. The criteria for effectiveness of treatment were clinical, laboratory and clinical data, including the blood level of malondialdehyde and the total antioxidant activity. Results. The combined therapy with the inclusion of ksimedon in children with community-acquired pneumonia has helped to improve their general condition, accelerate the regression of clinical symptoms and physical parameters in the lungs, reduce the incidence of complications, which helped to reduce the length of hospitalization. Due to such therapy in children of the main group the level of malondialdehyde decreased, while the total antioxidant activity increased. Conclusions. The inclusion of Ksimedon into the scheme of traditional treatment of school-age children with community-acquired pneumonia accelerates the regression of inflammation in the lungs and causes a positive shift in the peroxidation system
