Abstract

People around the world are becoming increasingly concerned about the dominance of popular culture and news media by multinational entertainment companies and media conglomerates. âFree tradeâ policies and profit-driven globalization pose threats to the survival of local art, media, culture and democracy. However, there is a process underway to create an international convention at UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Social, and Cultural Organization) that will protect each countryâs right to maintain media policies that promote cultural diversity. This session will update participants on the worldwide movement to promote cultural diversity and discuss how media activists can create pressure and influence for a strong cultural diversity convention at UNESCO in relationship to the reigning World Trade Organization regulatory policies.
