Abstract

Abstract A cathodic electrodeposition technique for fabricating stoichiometric coherent and oriented crystalline CdS thin films from aprotic electrolytes is described. Microstructural and X-ray diffraction studies show that the orientation of the c axis is normal to the film plane and that good nodular growth is preferred for deposition at current densities of about 5 mA cm -2 in electrolytes with excess Cd 2+ ions. The stoichiometry of the films is found to be nearly independent of deposition variables. The growth kinetics show non-linear behaviour attributed essentially to extrinsic surface reactions on the depositing CdS films.
