Abstract

Abstract Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease of cattle first identified in Britain in November 1986. The disease belongs to a group of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases that affect humans and animals. Prion diseases are characterized by the pathological increase of a misfolded, partially protease-resistant isoform named PrPSC.
