Abstract

Two fish ( Barbus conchonius) were initially trained to discriminate between two stimuli presented just under the water surface. Unreinforced transfer trials of the same stimuli reflected at the water-air interface were then interspersed among the direct image trials. A high degree of transfer of learning was evident during the first 30 transfer trials after which discriminative learning became evident. The results suggested that the fish could not only perceive images readily within the totally reflected region of its visual field but could discriminate between real images and reflected images shown at similar visual angles.
