Abstract

Abstract We investigated the effect of compounds elevating the intracellular cyclic nucleotide levels (cAMP and cGMP) on oocyte maturation induced by dithiothreitol (DTT) in sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus. Forskolin, theophylline, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine and sodium nitroprusside inhibited the DTT-induced oocyte maturation in Stichopus japonicus. The results suggest that, in holothurians, cyclic nucleotides are negative secondary messengers of oocyte maturation, i.e. a decrease in the level of cAMP and cGMP is a necessary condition for the reinitiation of meiosis in the oocytes of these animals.
