Abstract

Abstract A general approach to the determination of the composition and stability of a side complex M pH hL q, if the data for the main complex M mH jL n are known, is developed. Two cases and two experimental methods should be differentiated: (a) p(n-l)≠m(q-1),dilution method; (b) n≠q,constant concentration method. The case (a) was demonstrated on the uranyl-xylenol orange system (log β 121=29.80 ±0.05, log β 142= 56.60 ±0.10), and case (b) on the lanthanum-8-quinolinol system (log β 103=21.89±0.10, log β 102= 14.62±0.02 in aqueous 50% ethanol); β mjn and β phq are the overall stability constants of the corresponding complexes measured at the ionic strength 0.1 M and 25±1°C.
