Abstract

Abstract An equation is derived on semitheoretical grounds which expresses the average surface free energy of the solid—vapor interface of metals as a function of melting temperature and nearestneighbor separation in the liquid state. Methods for calculating reliable values for the nearestneighbor separation in liquid metals are presented which then permit accurate estimation of unknown surface free energies for solid metals at the melting temperature.
