Abstract

Presently available methods for the treatment of severe lead encephalopathy leavemuch to be desired, and the case fatality rate remains high. Measures employed to counteract severe cerebral edema are occasionally life saving but unpredictable. Extensive bilateral flap craniectomy has proved unsatisfactory in our experience; in fact the fatality rate has increased among patients so treated. Intensive corticosteroid therapy combined with moderate hypothermia has had no influence upon the over-all survival rate.
