In this doctoral thesis we consider the zeros of harmonic mappings in the complex plane Our study was originally motivated by the theory of gravitational lensing in astrophysics where special cases of such functions and their zeros play an important role However in this work we focus on much more general functions Our results range from purely analytical to numerical aspects We sharpen bounds previously published by other authors on the number of zeros of rational harmonic functions and harmonic polynomials Moreover we develop the first numerical continuation method that is guaranteed to find all zeros of a non-singular and non-degenerate harmonic mapping Our method works without any prior knowledge about the number or the position of the zeros Numerical experiments indicate that our method is extremely fast and highly accurate The foundation of both our analytical and our numerical results is an extensive study of how the number of solutions of changes as the parameter varies For this purpose we use mathematical tools from very different areas such as the argument principle for harmonic mappings or convergence results of Newton s method in Banach spaces As it turns out the position of with respect to the caustics of is crucial for determining the number of solutions of We formalize this observation by providing a complete theory that is of its own interest and a starting point to further advance the understanding of harmonic mappings in the future In dieser Dissertationsschrift betrachten wir die Nullstellen harmonischer Funktionen in der komplexen Zahlenebene Unsere Untersuchungen sind urspr nglich durch den Gravitationslinseneffekt in der Astrophysik motiviert wo Spezialf lle harmonischer Funktionen und ihrer Nullstellen eine wichtige Rolle spielen Wir konzentrieren uns in dieser Arbeit jedoch auf viel allgemeinere Funktionen Unsere Ergebnisse sind sowohl von rein analytischer als auch numerischer Natur F r rationale harmonische Funktionen und harmonische Polynome verbessern wir bekannte Resultate ber die Anzahl der Nullstellen Au erdem entwickeln wir das erste numerische Fortsetzungsverfahren welches garantiert alle Nullstellen einer nicht-singul ren und nicht-degenerierten harmonischen Funktion berechnet Dieses Verfahren funktioniert ohne jegliche Vorkenntnisse ber die Anzahl oder die Position der Nullstellen Unsere numerischen Experimente unterstreichen au erdem die hohe Geschwindigkeit und gro e Genauigkeit Grundlage f r unsere analytischen und numerischen Ergebnisse ist eine umfassende Untersuchung dar ber wie sich die Anzahl der L sungen von mit dem Parameter ver ndert Zu diesem Zweck verwenden wir Hilfsmittel aus ganz verschiedenen Bereichen der Mathematik wie z B das Argumentenprinzip f r harmonische Funktionen oder Konvergenzergebnisse f r das Newton-Verfahren in Banach-R umen Wie sich herausstellt ist die Position von bez glich der Kaustiken von entscheidend zur Bestimmung der Anzahl der L sungen von Wir formalisieren diese Beobachtung und vervollst ndigen sie zu einer allgemeinen Theorie Diese ist von eigenst ndigem Interesse und kann genutzt werden um das Verst ndnis von harmonischen Funktionen zuk nftig weiter zu verbessern
