Abstract Microwave pulse bursts were obtained through optical domain intensity modulated microwave carriers, sliced by cascaded modulator technique, followed by non-linear semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) pre-chirp. After 3 to 18 km of buried fiber propagation and photo detection, the microwave signals presented increased extinction ratio, up ...

We report the optimization of a 30 GHz COEO by using an all polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) to design its optical loop. We unexpectedly found that polarization mode dispersion (PMD) can have detrimental effects on the COEO performances. Indeed, with a 400 m SMF fiber spool in the optical cavity, a phase noise level as low as-115 dBc/Hz at 1 kH...

This paper proposes a novel iteration Bayesian reweighed (IBR) algorithm to obtain accurate estimates of a measurement parameter that uses only a few noisy measurement data. The method is applied to optimize the frequency fluctuation in an optical carrier-based microwave interferometry (OCMI) system. The algorithm iteratively estimates the frequenc...

We propose and numerically validate an all-optical scheme to generate optical pulse trains with varying temporal pulse-to-pulse delay and pulse duration. Applying a temporal sinusoidal phase modulation followed by a shaping of the spectral phase enables us to maintain high-quality Gaussian temporal profiles.

Silicon photonics offer a low-cost platform for large-scale optical systems, and find applications in data-centers, long-haul optical networks, LiDAR, and RF/microwave photonics. RF photonic systems offer interference-tolerant, wideband radio systems in RF and millimeter-wave bands. This is feasible through analog optical links that take advantage ...

We recently demonstrated modulators based on plasmonic technology displaying a flat frequency response reaching 500 GHz, high linearity and power handling. We discuss their potential for extending microwave photonics (MWP) applications to the sub-THz range, demonstrating analog photonic links with bandwidth in excess of 100 GHz and the capability o...

Fully autonomous driving, even under bad weather conditions, requires use of multiple sensor systems including radar imaging. Microwave photonics, especially the optical generation and distribution of radar signals, can overcome many of the electronic disadvantages. This article will give an overview about several photonic components and how they c...

An optically-controlled unit-cell with 1-bit phase quantization is proposed at X-band for integration in transmitarrays. It consists of two U-slot and O-slot patch antennas connected by a metallized via. Their transmission phase is controlled by illuminating at 1.55μm two Germanium semiconductors located on the top of the O-slot. A prototype has be...

A simple scheme to generate an integrated, nanoscale optical frequency comb (OFC) is numerically studied. In this study, all optical intensity modulators based on photonic crystal (PhC) cavities are cascaded both in series and parallel. By adjusting the modulation parameters, such as the repetition rate, phase, and coupling efficiency of the modula...
