In the present study, the treatability of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) using an anaerobic fixed bed biofilm reactor packed with granular activated carbon (GAC) and inoculated with non-acclimated biomass was performed in a semi-continuous mode under mesophilic conditions. Three organic loading rates (OLR) varied from 0.94 to 2.81 g COD/(L d) were ap...

In an anaerobic digestion (AD) process, the hydrolysis phase is often limited when substrates with high concentrations of solids are used. We hypothesized that applying micro-aeration in the hydrolysis phase and the application of granular activated carbon (GAC) in the methanogenesis phase could make the AD process more efficient. A packed bed reac...

Organohalogen compounds are formed in swimming pool waters when natural organic matter, such as hair, urine or sweat etc., react with the used disinfectant (usually chlorine). Many of the organohalogen compounds are persistent and hazardous for human health and aquatic ecosystems. Backwash water from swimming pool facilities is often released to th...

AbstractThe adsorption of a typical herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), from its aqueous solution on granular activated carbon (GAC) was studied. The kinetics of adsorption of 2,4-D on GAC and its porosimetric characteristics and microstructure were studied. A high adsorption capacity of GAC for 2,4-D was found.

The removal of tetracycline antibiotics from water is currently an important environmental issue. Here we prepared an iron-loaded granular activated carbon catalyst (GAC-Fe) through a one-step calcination method to remove tetracycline antibiotics from aqueous solution. The GAC-Fe was characterized by Fourier transform infrared absorption spectrosco...

The valorization of orange peel waste (OPW) is sought worldwide mainly via anaerobic digestion. A common problem encountered during the biological treatment is the seasonality of its production and the presence of d-Limonene. The latter is a typical anti-microbial compound. This work aims to evaluate the effect of the use of granular activated carb...

In this study we describe the immobilization of arsenic as scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O) by a thermophilic iron-oxidizing mixed culture from an acidic sulfate medium containing 500 mg L-1 of Fe(II), 500 mg L-1 As(III) and granular activated carbon (GAC) as the main arsenite oxidant. This study shows that crystalline scorodite can only be precipitated in ...

The contamination of groundwater sources with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the United States is a widespread problem for the drinking water industry. Well water supplies in the municipalities of Fountain, Security, and Widefield, Colorado, contain perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate levels greater than the U.S. Env...

Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been widely introduced to advanced drinking water purification plants to remove organic matter and ammonium. Backwashing, which is the routine practice for GAC maintenance, is an important operational factor influencing the performance of GAC and its microbial biomass. In this study, the effects of backwashing on...
