Mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) while also generating high amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from oxygen metabolism. ROS are small but highly reactive molecules that can be detrimental if unregulated. While normally functioning mitochondria produce molecules that counteract ROS production, an imbalance between the a...

The effects of the cell size and distribution on the mechanical properties of polypropylene foam were simulated and analyzed by finite element modeling with ANSYS and supporting experiments. The results show that the reduced cell size and narrow size distribution have beneficial influences on both the tensile and impact strengths. Decreasing the ce...

Understanding the correlation between cell deformation and initial cell structure during compression is important for improvement and development of effective applications of aluminum foams. Foams with porosities lower than 75% now get more attention because of more spherical cells and better mechanical performance. Herein, two low porosity aluminu...

Simple Summary We analyzed the morphological changes in root tip cells caused by the application of iso-osmotic NaCl and Na2SO4 solutions to tomato plants harboring an introduced superoxide dismutase gene. To study the roots of tomato plants cultivar Belyi Naliv and FeSOD-transgenic line, we examined the distribution of reactive oxygen species and ...

The weight of the liver is one of the important selection criteria in the quality of “foie gras”. This factor is highly variable despite the fact that individuals are reared, overfed and slaughtered in the same way. In this study, we performed an analysis of the proteome profile of two weight classes of light (between 550 and 599 g) and heavy (more...

Salinization of soil is a global environmental concern. To bioremediate or use saline-alkali lands, most studies focused on screening of halophytes and breeding of saline-tolerant non-halophyte vegetables. Seldom studies investigated effects of salinity on general landscape plants, which are important for landscape construction in urban areas. In t...

In this study, silicone rubber foam (SF) was prepared through cross-linking and foaming. The effects of ethanol content on the SF were investigated in terms of the physical properties, static cushioning properties, dynamic thermomechanical properties, and dynamic fatigue properties. The cell structure was characterized using scanning electron micro...

In this study, we fabricated poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcellular foams featuring tunable cellular structures and porosity, through adjusting the supercritical CO2 foaming conditions. Experimental testing and finite element model (FEM) simulations were conducted to systematically elucidate the influence of the foaming parameters and stru...

In the current study, we evaluated the modulatory effects of size and surface coating/charge of AgNPs on their toxicity to a unicellular yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4741 - a fungal model. For that, the toxicity of a set of 10 and 80 nm citrate-coated (negatively charged) and branched polyethylenimine (bPEI) coated (positively charged) AgNPs wa...
