OBJECTIVES: To ascertain: 1) the frequency of thrombocytopenia and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia; 2) positive predictive value of the Pretest Probability Score in identifying heparin-induced thrombocytopenia; and 3) clinical outcome of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia in adult patients receiving venovenous- or venoarterial-extracorporeal membran...

RATIONALE: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with a poor outcome. Although pulmonary embolism (PE) may promote AKI through renal congestion and/or hemodynamic instability, its frequency and influence on outcome in patients with acute PE have been poorly studied. METHODS: The frequency of AKI (defined according to the "Kidney Disease: Improvin...

Locating the site of increased resistance within the vascular tree in pulmonary arterial hypertension could assist in both patient diagnosis and tailoring treatment. Wave intensity analysis (WIA) is a wave analysis method that may be capable of localizing the major site of reflection within a vascular system. We investigated the contribution of WIA...

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major health problem, responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, and imposes a heavy economic burden to healthcare systems (1). Although most events resolve without complication through spontaneous lysis and recanalization, DVT can be complicated with life-threatening pulmonary embolism (2), while approxima...

We identified two new genetic variants associated to VTE development, as well as a robust prediction model to assess the risk of thrombosis for women using combined oral contraceptives. This model outperforms current medical practice as well as previously published models and is the first model specific to CC use.

We sought to determine whether catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with reduced occurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular events. Using routinely collected hospital data, ablation patients were matched to two control cohorts via direct and propensity score matching. A total of 4,991 ablation patients were matched 1:1 to general...

We sought to determine from key clinical outcomes whether catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with increased survival. Using routinely collected hospital data, ablation patients were matched to two control cohorts using direct and propensity score methodology. Four thousand nine hundred ninety-one ablation patients were matc...

Pulmonary wave reflections are a potential hemodynamic biomarker for pulmonary hypertension (PH) and can be analyzed using wave intensity analysis (WIA). In this study we used pulmonary vessel area and flow obtained using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) to implement WIA noninvasively. We hypothesized that this method could detect differences in re...
