BackgroundSystemic rheumatic diseases (SRDs) are a group of inflammatory disorders that can require intensive care unit (ICU) admission because of multiorgan involvement with end-organ failure(s). Critically ill SRD patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) were studied to gain insight into their characteristics and outcomes.Met...

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a fatal condition with insufficiently clarified etiology. Supportive care for severe hypoxemia remains the mainstay of essential interventions for ARDS. In recent years, adequate ventilation to prevent ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) and patient self-inflicted lung injury (P-SILI) as well as lung-...

Purpose Limited data are available on venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in patients with severe hypoxemic respiratory failure from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods We examined the clinical features and outcomes of 190 patients treated with ECMO within 14 days of ICU admission, using data from a multicenter cohort stu...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is being increasingly used in patients having sepsis-induced cardiovascular dysfunction. We report successful use of venovenous ECMO in septic shock secondary to pneumonia in the presence of severe left ventricular dysfunction. We also discuss the quantitative evaluation of cardiovascular dysfunction, whic...

A 66-year-old male with recent diagnosis of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction was referred to our institution for management of cardiogenic/vasodilatory shock. During his evaluation, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest from refractory ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation (VT/VF) despite normal electrolytes and no evidence of prior ventri...

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has had a positive impact on the outcomes after lung transplantation. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has a role in all phases of lung transplantation—preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods. It serves as a bridge to transplantation in appropriate patients awaiting lung transplantat...

BackgroundMechanical power (MP) refers to the energy delivered by a ventilator to the respiratory system per unit of time. MP referenced to predicted body weight (PBW) or respiratory system compliance have better predictive value for mortality than MP alone in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Our objective was to assess the potential imp...

BackgroundExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), an invasive mechanical therapy, provides cardio-respiratory support to critically ill patients when maximal conventional support has failed. ECMO is delivered via large-bore cannulae which must be effectively secured to avoid complications including cannula migration, dislodgement and accidental...
