It is established that high concentrations of nitric oxide(1) (NO), as released from activated macrophages, induce apoptosis in breast cancer cells. In this study, we assessed the potential of a light-activated NO donor [(Me2bpb)Ru(NO)(Resf)], a recently reported apoptototic agent, in suppressing the anchorage independent growth potentials of an ag...

Nitric oxide (NO) is recognized as one of the major players in various biochemical processes, including blood pressure, neurotransmission and immune responses. However, experimental studies involving NO are often limited by difficulties associated with the use of NO gas, including its toxicity and precise control over NO concentration. Moreover, th...

Although application of silver nitrate and silver sulfadiazine have been shown to be effective in thwarting infections at burn sites, optimization of the delivery of bioactive silver (Ag(+)) remains as an obstacle due to rapid precipitation and/or insolubility of the silver sources. To circumvent these shortcomings, we have designed a silver(I) com...

The physiological roles of CO in neurotransmission, vasorelaxation, and cytoprotective activities have raised interest in the design and syntheses of CO-releasing materials (CORMs) that could be employed to modulate such biological pathways. Three iron-based CORMs, namely, [(PaPy(3))Fe(CO)](ClO(4)) (1), [(SBPy(3))Fe(CO)](BF(4))(2) (2), and [(Tpmen)...

A photoactive manganese nitrosyl, namely [Mn(PaPy(3))(NO)](ClO(4)) (Mn-NO), has been loaded into the columnar pores of an MCM-41 host. Strong interaction between the polar nitrosyl and the -OH groups on the host wall leads to excellent entrapment of the NO donor within the porous host. With the aluminosilicate-based host (Al-MCM-41), the loading is...

Two Mn(I) carbonyl complexes namely [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] and [Mn(azpy)(CO)3(PPh3)](ClO4) (azpy = 2-phenylazopyridine) have been synthesized and characterized. Both complexes exhibit rapid CO release upon exposure to low power visible light. [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] shows significant phototoxicity toward two malignant cell lines HeLa and MDA-MB-231.
