Franck Guarnieri

Professor at MINES ParisTech / PSL Research University

Dr Franck Guarnieri is Professor and founding Chair of the Centre for research on Risks and Crises (CRC) at MINES ParisTech / PSL Research University (Université de recherche Paris Sciences et Lettres). His specialty is engineering thinking in the domain of risk analysis and crisis management, with specific application to complex systems (for example, in the nuclear, offshore oil platforms, and aeronautics sectors). His earlier research, which started in 1995 with a PhD, has focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (expert systems, neural networks, case-based reasoning systems, multi-agent systems, etc.) to optimize decision-making when faced with emergency situations, with the explicit inclusion of human and organizational factors.
His recent work has taken a cross-disciplinary approach. In particular, it explores the philosophical and anthropological scope of engineering responses to risks, and collective technical action in critical and extreme situations.
He is the author of more than one hundred publications, and co-edited the book Resilience: A New Paradigm of Nuclear Safety (Springer, 2017). He is currently a reviewer for several academic journals, including: Safety Science (Elsevier), Risk Analysis (Wiley), and the International Journal of Loss Prevention (Elsevier).
He has been designated as a subject expert by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the European Horizon 2020 program. In 2014, he received the prestigious René-Joseph Laufer Literary Prize from the French Academy of Sciences.
He holds an MS in Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Sciences and a PhD, both from Joseph Fourier University (Grenoble, France).
