Summary

Since March 2017 and as part of the DKTK consortium in Cancer Immunotherapy, our research program is focused on dissecting the molecular and cellular regulation derived from specialized bone marrow microenvironment called “niche” that underlies the self-renewal/survival of normal hematopoietic stem cells and their malignant leukemia stem cell counterparts. In doing so we aim to identify the processes that when dysregulated lead to leukemic transformation and relapse and therefore represent critical therapeutic targets for the clinic.
We will take a multidisciplinary approach grounded in studies with primary human cells and leukemia mouse models that capitalize on functional genetics to characterize fundamental regulatory cancerous niche processes and pre-clinical modelling to identify novel immune and stem cell regulators towards translational development of novel cellular therapies for cancer treatment and regenerative medicine.

I received my PhD in Molecular and Cell biology in 2006 from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris, France) under co-supervision of Dr. Dominique Dunon & Dr. Thierry Jaffredo where I was mentored and gained expertise in vertebrae hematopoiesis during early embryonic development. Thereafter, I joined Dr. Mick Bhatia’s lab in February 2007 for postdoctoral training to pursue my training in the fundamental understanding of the biology of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and leukemic stem cells (LSCs) as well as their functional interaction with an interrelated supportive microenvironment in the bone marrow, also called ‘Niche’, using in vitro and in vivo techniques both in human (NOD/SCID assays) and mouse (transgenic models) paralleled with human bone marrow biopsies for potential translational clinical applications and drug screening.
