Summary

I am embryologist (Associate Professor in Experimental Embryology and Fertility in Zoology Department, Faculty of Science, Beni-Suef University, Egypt). Also, I am a member of a number of eminent societies, organizations & schools including the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), the European Neuroendocrine Association, the New York Academy of Science, the Society for Endocrinology, the Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA), the American Physiological Society (APS), the European Center for Research Training & Development, the 21st IBRO (International Brain Research Organization) Africa Schools course, the Egyptian Society of Experimental Biology and the Egyptian Society of natural toxins (ESNT).

The adequate functioning of the maternal thyroid gland plays an important

role to ensure that the newborns develop normally. Thus, mothers with hypo- or

hyperfunctioning thyroid glands are at increased risk for newborns defects

concomitant with the disturbances induced in the maternal hormonal machinery.

Hence, our experimental hypo- and hyperthyroidism are used, in general, to

recognize the alleged association of newborns abnormalities (developmental,

teratogenic and physiological changes) associated with the different thyroid status

of their mothers. It is noteworthy also to find out the effect of age-related changes in

thyroid (structure and function) and some brain regions [cerebrum (CR), cerebellum

(CB) and medulla oblongata (MO)] of rat newborns.

Effect of heat stress on the development of the nervous system in albino rat. 2002 - 2005

cell biology and histology (Beni-Suef EG)

The present study shows the effect of heat stress on some CNS

regions (cerebellar cortex, cerebral cortex, medulla oblongata, cervical

and lumbar regions of spinal cord). The normal rat newborns at birth

were kept at laboratory temperature. Also, other newborns at birth were

daily subjected to high temperature for two hours at 40 ± 1 °C till their

decapitation at 7, 14 and 21 days old, left for one week beyond 21 days

old without exposure and then decapitated.

The present serial histological sections at 5μm thick were stained

with haematoxylin & eosin, toludine blue and PAS reaction stains to

show the histoarchitecture, Nissl granules and carbohydrate granules

respectively in all investigated CNS regions. Other serial sections were

made at 25 μm thick and stained with Golgi - copsch stain to show the

development of different types of the nerve cells and the dendritic

structures.
